X-ray Analysis of the Vela Pulsar

This project used archival Chandra observations of PSR J0835−4510, the Vela Pulsar, to explore its spectrum and the spatial distribution of its X-ray emission.

Overview

The August 2010 data were separated into soft- and hard-X-ray energy bands. We compared their spatial distributions and calculated a hard-to-soft ratio of 0.03 for the selected regions.

The project also considered the physical mechanisms responsible for the observed emission. Electronic transitions were discussed as a likely contributor at softer energies, while synchrotron radiation was considered for the higher-energy component.
